You see I have attended CFR meetings so I actually know what goes on behind closed doors.
I am a retired Corporate executive from the semiconductor industry. The Companies I was with had factories around the world so I have experienced dealing with governments and the rules and regulations. During my life I have been very politically active staring with Barry Goldwater who I campaigned for as a child. He was a family friend and dined at our home many times.
I was active in the sagebrush rebellion in the 70s and very active in politics at all levels. At one point I had met a held discussion with most of the western Senators and many of the Congresspersons. Knew a few governors by our first names. My wife was a staff person in one of the counties in Oregon during the Reagan election and we attended the inauguration [sitting in the front section].
I have met each President since Ike except JFK, LBJ, Carter, and Clinton. One of my quests was in Nevada in the 80s when a 6th grade school teacher told my wife and me that he could not teach my son who was to advanced having scored a 1170 out of 1600 in the college SAT test. Well, that set me off and starting with phone calls to my Congresswoman and Senators.
From there I wrote a six page letter explaining the problems of school funding for exceptional students. In essence the school district from the State board down were asking all advanced students to dim their brightness so the slow could keep up. The schools had no budget for advanced placement teachers or books. The lack of interest shown by the local superintendent was expressed in not very nice terms.
So, I then asked for the exact law that enabled the exceptional child laws [included handicapped and high IQ kids]. I explained that there was a special separate school built for the handicapped and that a bus picked them up in front of their house each day all year long but they had not a penny left for the high IQ. I then asked for the total amount of money given to the State so I could find out why none got to the high IQ kids. Then stated that it might take a calls action suit against the State and local districts for discrimination for satisfaction to be gained.
There had before been a group of families that had tired to get some action for years but were just shined on which I included in the letter. So, the problem is one of long standing and all refused to even talk about how to remedy the situation. The letter was posted an about a week later I was under my house working on some pipes when my wife said the Governor was on the phone. I crawled out and answered the phone, the Governor [past school teacher] said Magnus what are you doing and I answered – your job Governor – he said he would fix the problem, in about an hour the superintendent off the County was on the phone asking if we could meet in one hour?
My answer was well I need to shower so how about 2 hours from now – no problem he said. Well the classes got funded teachers were hired special classes in high school were available and even classes in Science at the University. Before it was over we even got shop classes returned to high school for the kids that wanted jobs skills.
The Congresswoman and others in DC even offered me a speech writing position. It was a lot of work but I was well known and they knew I would not yield so they just got it done.
